Banking & Payments Manager

Joy began her career with the Society as a Senior Clerk within the Finance department. Joy is now the Banking & Payments Manager within Finance and has responsibility for the financial systems and banking relationships, and the management of a team of four.

Why did you choose this particular career path?

I chose this career path by chance. I’d been made redundant from my previous job with another Bank and the senior clerk’s job was a role I was familiar with.

What is involved in your role?

My current role is varied. I am the business owner of the Society’s banking systems – Bank Accounts, cheques and cash, and I am responsible for the Society’s relationship with its Banks and Cash Courier. I manage a team of 4 people whose day to day tasks involve uploading money to customer accounts, ensuring the branch network is balanced every day, checking that cash is managed correctly, and that cheques issued by us are debited correctly and funds are received for cheques collected by us. I am also responsible for several reconciliations between our bank accounts and our core financial systems. In addition, I attend project meetings on behalf of the Finance department and am a point of contact for the branches and other departments in relation to Banking matters.

What has been the most influential moment in your career?

The most influential moment in my career was probably being made redundant and having to look for a new job. Had it not been for that, I would probably not have considered looking at Newcastle Building Society.

What do you like best about working here?

What I like about working at the Society is how open and friendly and progressive it is, and how everyone has the opportunity to progress; we like to promote from within. Location is a great selling point too.
