Successful Grant Recipients

Back in 2016, we launched the Newcastle Building Society Community Fund. With the help of our customers, we’ve begun the process of providing grants to the first of what will be many deserving recipients across our branch network.

Phase 8

Teesside (4 grants; £7,438 in total)

Zoe’s Place Trust - £3,000
A grant of £3,000 will provide children who require respite care, and inpatients, with four hours of physiotherapy per week for one year.

Great North Air Ambulance - £1,058
Three new flight suits for new Air Ambulance doctors will be purchased using their grant of £1,058.

Norton Hockey Club - £750
£750 will provide Norton Hockey Club a set of free-standing junior hockey goals

Neoangels - £2,630
21 numbered lockers and keys will be provided on the Neonatal Unit at James Cook Hospital with a grant of £2,630

Tyne and Wear (24 grants; £54,293 in total)

Pathways 4 All Limited - £2,700
A grant of £2,700 will be used to purchase a sensory LED musical touch wall for the Tim Lamb Centre in North Tyneside.

The BAY Foodbank - £3,000
The £3,000 grant will enable The BAY Foodbank to purchase food for two breakfast clubs and a lunch club for schools on the Meadowell Estate in North Tyneside.

Smile for Life Children’s Charity - £3,000
Smile for Life is creating work placements for two disabled youngsters as assistant chefs at its Café Beam premises with a grant of £3,000.

Darcey’s Dream – My Family and Siblings Matter - £2,943
Darcey’s Dream will use their grant of £2,943 to purchase equipment for a bereavement suite for families who have lost a child,.

Rainbow Foundation Sunderland - £1,080
A grant of £1,080 will pay for Rainbow Foundation Sunderland to host a minimum of 12 meetings per year for the LGBTQ drop in service.

Gateshead Foodbank - £3,000
The full grant of £3,000 will be used by Gateshead Foodbank to provide food vouchers and emergency food parcels to vulnerable people over Christmas.

Newcastle U3A - £750
Newcastle University of the Third Age is part of the national Third Age Trust and encourages people over 50 who are no longer in full time employment to learn. They are using their grant of £750 to purchase a television to help improve learning and inclusion with quality, audio-visual equipment.

Silverline Memories - £1,300
£1,300 will pay for room rental for Silverline Memories who provide people living with Dementia places to go and things to do.

Age UK Gateshead - £2,580
A 55 inch portable touchscreen, stand and power source will be purchased with a grant of £2,580 for use by those aged over 50 suffering from dementia.

The Bede Foodbank T/A Newcastle West End Foodbank - £2,885
A grant of £2,885 will enable the West End Foodbank to purchase a greenhouse for the garden at the Lillia Centre. An area of unused land to the rear of the Lillia Centre has recently been transformed into a productive kitchen garden to support healthy eating amongst those who use the Foodbank's services.

NEH (North East Homeless) - £2,999
A barista style coffee machine will be purchased with a grant of £2,999 in a safe haven for the homeless in North Tyneside.

Baby Equipment Loans Service (BELS) Howdon - £2,075
A grant of £2,075 will enable BELS to fund their Stay and Play for a year.

Jesmond Dementia Action Alliance - £3,000
A grant of £3,000 will provide 100 outreach fitness sessions, benefitting around 18 older people in Jesmond.

Live Well with Cancer - £1,980
A £1,980 grant is being used to purchase a laptop, screen, projector and recording equipment to be used for wellbeing workshops.

Children North East - £2,890
£2,890 will go towards the running costs to turn an allotment into a project to inspire disadvantaged young people.

Newcastle Vision Support - £2,900
Newcastle Vision support will use their grant of £2,900 to host music concerts for elderly visually impaired people in Newcastle.

Walking with In North Tyneside - £2,920
A grant of £2,920 will enable Walking with In North Tyneside to purchase IT equipment for its new IT hub. This will help refugee and asylum seeker clients connect with essential services and keep in touch with their families abroad.

Land of Oak & Iron Trust - £1,720
The Land of Oak & Iron Trust will use a grant of £1,720 to deliver local heritage workshops to two schools to support in learning about the history and culture on their doorstep.

Liberdade - £2,820
A grant of £2,820 will be used to pay for a volunteer support worker for people with learning disabilities at Gosforth Civic Theatre.

TEN North East Limited - £2,984
£2,984 will give 25 young carers and their families the opportunity to engage in a six week sport programme. The sessions for young carers aged 5 - 18 will offer respite and emotional support as well as providing them with an opportunity to try new forms of physical activity.

Whickham Cricket Club - £1,875
Changing room and scorebox windows will be replaced with this grant of £1,875 at the Whickham Cricket club to improve visibility for spectators, players and scorers.

Josie’s Dragonfly Trust - £1,500
£1,500 will help Josie’s Dragonfly trust purchase contents for activity boxes for young cancer patients during long stays in hospital to help reduce isolation.

Sunderland Headlight - £1,392
Sunderland Headlight will use their grant of £1,392 to purchase new seating and a coffee table for the social area at the centre, which is mainly used to support people with mental ill health.

Cumbria (3 grants; £8,612 in total)

Eden Carers - £1,900
1,900 will fund four respite trips and activities for Carers of all ages.

Carlisle Key - £2,537
Carlisle Key is based in Cumbria and works with young homeless or those at risk of becoming homeless between the ages of 16 – 25. The grant of £2,537 will provide welcome packs for young people accessing supported accommodation.

Eden Valley Hospice - £1,400
£1,400 will be used to pay for a height adjustable table for children and young adults at the Jigsaw Children’s Hospice.

County Durham (3 grants; £5,172 in total)

Cheesy Waffles Youth Project - £2,976
£2,976 will provide staffing for a weekly youth club session during term time. The scheme will enable a safe and friendly environment for young people to receive support, learn new skills and experience new activities.

If U Care Share - £1,300
£1,300 is being used to fund a 'Time To Remember' remembrance event, for those who have lost family members to suicide.

Willow Burn Hospice - £896
A pergola will be purchased with a grant of £896 to provide shade to the seated decking area for patients and day service clients to relax and enjoy the fresh air and views of Derwentside

Northumberland (8 grants; £18,837 in total)

Lifespan Complementary - £2,009
£2,009 will contribute towards therapist visits and travel expenses when attending patients in their home, care home or hospice.

Wansbeck Valley Food bank - £3,000
A full grant of £3,000 will be used to provide food support for those in need during December 2019 and January 2020.

Litterbugs - £935
Two signs will be purchased to increase and promote litter picking in the coastal areas of Amble and Warkworth with a grant of £935.

Tynedale Hospice at Home - £3,000
The full grant of £3,000 will be used to pay for volunteer driver costs for the hospital transport service in rural areas of Northumberland.

Berwick Male Voice Choir - £1,000
Sheet music will be purchased with a grant of £1,000

Chrysalis at Tynedale – 2,900
£2,900 will fund a weekly social group in a local café for people living with Dementia.

YMCA Northumberland - £2,993
A grant of £2,993 will be used to pay for an instructor to deliver weekly cookery sessions to children and young people in the YMCA’s kitchen.

Wooler Community Food Garden - £3,000
An accessible composting toilet will be purchased with their grant of £3,000 and installed as part of the Group’s community garden expansion.

Scotland (1 grant; £987 in total)

Coldstream Playgroup & Toddlers - £937
£937 will help provide essential service for families in the small town of Coldstream and will cover staffing costs
