Financial Education

We believe we have an important role to play in educating those who live in our local communities on aspects of their finances and financial independence. Through our Financial Education programme, we aim to pass on our financial expertise to those who need it most, right from school children to those entering retirement, giving them the skills and knowledge they need to manage their money and make sound financial decisions.

The Boardroom Charity Challenge

Through the Boardroom Charity Challenge, the Newcastle has helped over 2,000 children in schools across its heartland area learn about managing money and becoming more financially independent later in life.

Hundreds of nine to ten year old school children compete in the 'Dragons Den' style challenge each year to win £1,000 prize money. The children are asked, as part of a six-week long curriculum based learning programme, to develop business ideas that focus on benefiting their local community while also making a profit. Eight teams reach the final, with the selected teams presenting their business ideas to a panel of judges, including our Chief Executive, at a head office boardroom. The prize money is then put towards turning the idea into reality with all proceeds going to a regional charity.

Throughout the challenge, from the initial pitches right up until the final, each team is mentored by a Branch Manager from their local area, giving them the knowledge they need to create their business idea.

Developing the skills and knowledge you need to look after your own finances is something we believe you need to start learning about early and our Boardroom Charity Challenge gives us a wonderful opportunity every year to share our expertise in this area with children across the North East and Cumbria.

Careers Advice

We also get involved with secondary schools and children in Years 9 and 10 who are starting to consider their career options.

Our branch managers visit schools in their local communities to help students with practical career skills, including interview techniques and practice, careers speed-dating and application form coaching, as well as visiting careers fairs to showcase the opportunities available in financial services.

Financial Planning Seminars

Financial education doesn't stop at school. There are many financial milestones throughout life, from your first mortgage to retirement and beyond. Many of them we may not have considered or even heard of.

Our financial planning seminars aim to educate adults on the importance of financial decisions they'll need to make throughout life, how to prepare for them and the options available.

Our financial planning seminars cover a large range of topics including:

  • Savings and investments
  • Retirement planning
  • Funeral planning
  • Inheritance tax planning
  • Estate planning

We also believe that it's more important than ever to equip young adults with the right knowledge and guidance they'll need to get onto the property ladder. So we also hold regular First Time Buyer events which cut through all of the jargon, explaining step by step how mortgages work, the application process and the costs involved.

All of our seminars are informal and informative, offer a free information pack and there's always experts on hand to answer any questions. Plus, they're always free to attend, with absolutely no obligation.
