Volunteering: 2017 so far

It’s been a year filled with volunteering at Newcastle Building Society; so let’s take a look at some of the things our colleagues have been up to in the community.

In January our volunteers were out in full force!

Our commercial lending team returned to the Stephenson Museum after their visit in November. Their day involved lots of hard work, returning the museum back to normal after Christmas.

21 volunteers from our customer service centre and branch network went along to the North Shields warehouse of Newcastle West End Food Bank. They braved the cold, spending a full day lifting, sorting and packing over 5 tonnes of donations ready to be made into food parcels.

Newcastle West End Food Bank shared their thanks via Facebook “Huge thanks to the great team from Newcastle Building Society who completed a really successful volunteering day in our warehouse today.” “We simply could not function as efficiently without this kind of corporate help. Grateful thanks to all who were involved”.

Volunteers from our Cramlington branch spent the day at Benton Cat and Dog Shelter. The aim of the day was to clean up the shelter and the team succeeded! It was an extremely rewarding day for volunteers as they got the pleasure of seeing three dogs re-homed.

In March, colleagues from our marketing team went Careers Speed Dating! The event took place at St Josephs Catholic Academy in Hebburn; offering year nine pupils the chance to ask career related questions to the volunteers.

Our Customer Outcomes team took a trip to the North York Moors to help the North York Moors National Park Ranger Service build a boardwalk over a section of track that had become impassable. It’s safe to say the team slept well that night!

Colleagues from our Carlisle and Penrith branches joined forces to raise awareness of dementia in the centre of Carlisle. Colleagues from Penrith branch became Dementia friends back in 2016 and have been working closely with the Alzheimer’s alliance to help Penrith become a Dementia friendly town.

June was a month jam packed with Volunteering.

Kicking off the month was a team from Newcastle Strategic Solutions, volunteering at the Children’s Heart Unit Fund. With their paint brushes at the ready the team painted picnic tables for the CHUF Toddle and Family Fun Day.

As part of the North Shields Chamber of Trades Careers Day, our North Shields Branch Manager volunteered at Waterville Primary School. This involved putting together a presentation to give the different classes an insight into what we do as a building society and the career opportunities available.

West Denton branch and colleagues from our Finance department helped out at Newcastle West End Food Bank.

With summer in full swing, colleagues got out and about volunteering in the community. Starting with the Toddle and Family Fun Day for CHUF, colleagues dressed as characters to entertain the ‘toddlers’ along the route, helped out on stalls, gave out medals and goody bags and assisted with shuttle bus transport.

Volunteers across the society also visited Daisy Chain; a charity that supports children and their families affected by autism; as well as volunteering at the retail outlet within South Tyneside District Hospital, SAINT (Social Action in North Tyneside), Tees Valley Wildlife Trust and a day was spent promoting the Anthony Nolan Trust.

A team from Newcastle Strategic Solutions enjoyed a day in the sun putting their green thumbs to work in Jesmond Dene’s wild and beautiful landscape; whilst colleagues from HR took a trip to Newcastle Cat and Dog Shelter.
