Diversity Statement

Newcastle Building Society is committed to promoting equality and diversity within the workplace.

We aim to encourage a culture of positivity, whilst ensuring that all staff members, Society customers, visitors, applicants, contractors, consultants and suppliers are treated in an equitable, fair and consistent manner in line with our values.

Newcastle Building Society recognises the importance of providing equal opportunities to everyone and creating a workplace free from discrimination and harassment. The Society will also seek to make any reasonable adjustments in terms of the recruitment, employment, training and career development of staff in order to promote equal treatment for all applicants and staff members.

We aim to ensure that job requirements and job selection criteria are clear and based only on what is required to effectively fulfil the role requirements. We aim to ensure that no job applicant is placed at a disadvantage by practices or requirements which disproportionately disadvantage protected groups and which are not justified by the demands of the job.

A role profile will be available for all jobs, to ensure that focus remains on what the job involves and the skills, experience and qualifications which are relevant and necessary. All selection will be based on defined criteria and will deal only with the applicant’s suitability for the job.

Advertisements for posts will contain clear information to enable potential applicants to assess their suitability for the role. All external advertisements will be open to internal applications.

When inviting candidates for interview, the Society will request any information on any reasonable adjustments that are required to enable the applicant to attend, and will accommodate these adjustments wherever reasonably possible and practicable.

We will not ask for irrelevant information on application forms or in interviews, but will focus on whether someone has the relevant skills, qualities and experience to do the job.

We may monitor information in relation to applicants, short-listed candidates and those successfully recruited for each vacancy, as well as staff demographics and retention rates.

All allegations of potential breaches of the Diversity Policy will be fully investigated.
