Hints and Tips

Newcastle Building Society offers a rewarding, and at times varied, working life and as such we can receive a large volume of applications.

What should I think about when preparing my application?

  • Newcastle Building Society offers a rewarding, and varied, working life and as such we can receive a large volume of applications. Make sure that your application attracts attention and helps you stand out. Take careful consideration of your skills, knowledge and experience and how they match the role you’re applying for.
  • Make sure you answer each question fully, ensuring you’ve presented clear evidence that you possess all the qualities and skills that we are looking for and link your answers to the role profile / job description.
  • Ensure your application is relevant, truthful and focused; develop the details of your answers but try to keep them as succinct and as to the point as possible.
  • We are interested in what you’ve achieved, learned and done, but we are even more interested in what you can do.
  • Always reflect on your first draft, check grammar and spelling and make sure you have completed the application fully; getting someone to proofread your application is always a good idea.
  • We know you’ve potentially applied for roles with others recently; that’s ok, but please don’t just copy and paste your answers from a previous application. Think about this application in isolation; why do you want to work for us?

I’ve been invited for an interview. But what should I think about in advance?

Before the interview

The most important single piece of advice anyone can give you before an interview is this: Prepare.

  • Prepare examples. What have you achieved, how and why?
  • Prepare and plan the day. Confirm the date, time and location of the interview and how you’re going to get there.
  • Prepare yourself. Get plenty of rest the night before and dress professionally.
  • Prepare questions. Think about what you would like to ask us about the role, the department and wider Newcastle Building Society Group.

During the interview

Be positive and enthusiastic – sell yourself. But make sure you tell the truth; honesty and integrity are essential values to us.

Take your time if you need to. Reflect upon the question to make sure you provide the best answer you can.

Speak clearly, confidently and make eye contact.

Ask for clarification of a question if necessary.

We want you to do well in your interview just as much as you do. Try to relax.

The STARR Model

One of the best methods to giving good answers is to use examples. One way of doing that is by using the STARR model.
