Colleague Focus: Jim Hooker, Head of IT Security

Hear from one of the newest members of our team, Jim Hooker, who recently started at Newcastle Building Society – in the middle of a national lockdown!

Jim Hooker joined the Society in May 2020 as our new Head of IT Security. We asked him to share a few thoughts on the recruitment process and what it’s been like joining Newcastle Building Society whilst the nation stayed at home:

As you can imagine, starting a new job in the age of COVID-19 has been quite an interesting experience.

The IT Services and HR teams did a great job of getting me up and running which meant I could join team meetings by video straight away and discover how the Society had been managing during the pandemic.

It was immediately obvious that although they were now physically separate, everyone had been working and responding together during such a difficult time - and it was great to hear stories of how branch colleagues are out in the community assisting vulnerable people.

It is a great showcase for the company values and commitment to the local community which was one of the things that attracted me to the role when it was published last year.

I’ve spent quite a lot of time on video calls, meeting people at all levels across the business. Whilst the experience has been interesting, it has definitely been a positive one and I have to thank everyone at the Society for being so helpful and accommodating.

I am happy to report that no-one has used the phrase 'nice to e-meet you' which has definitely been a positive! One day I’ll get to meet everyone in person!

This is such an exciting time to join the Society and I’m delighted with the way the recruitment and onboarding process went – it’s been one of the best decisions I’ve made.
