Dementia Friends

As part of the UK’s biggest ever initiative to change the way people act, think and talk about dementia; our branch managers from across our region have been busy training to become Dementia Friends.

This fantastic training ensured that branch staff understand what it is like to live with the disease; as well as understand how they can help when those living with the condition visit the branch.

Like many of us, Kimberley Saunders, Manager in our Yarm Library branch found the difference between Alzheimer’s and dementia confusing “The Dementia Friends training aided this understanding and I now know that dementia is an umbrella term that Alzheimer’s disease can fall under. It can occur due to a variety of conditions, the most common of which is Alzheimer’s disease.”

Yarm branch held a Dementia Awareness Day, which not only involved lots of tea and biscuits, but offered Newcastle Building Society and library customers the chance to receive Dementia Friends training; as well as give customers the opportunity to chat and open up about their experiences with dementia.

We now have a Dementia Friend in every branch across our region!
