The story of Dementia Friends

Launched by Alzheimer’s Society, Dementia Friends is the UK’s biggest initiative to change the way people act, think and talk about dementia.

Dementia Friends helps raise awareness of dementia through dementia awareness sessions with Dementia Champions. A Dementia Champion is a volunteer who encourages others to make a positive difference to people living with dementia in their community by providing information on the impacts of dementia and also teaching people how they can help.

There are currently over 10,500 Dementia Friends Champions in the UK, helping to create dementia friendly communities together. We’re lucky enough to have our very own Champion at Newcastle Building Society, Sheila Hodgson, who has helped the majority of our colleagues become Dementia Friends.

Dementia Friends are people who are informed about what it’s like to live with dementia and aim to make a difference in their community. Anyone at any age can become a Dementia Friend, either by attending a face-to-face Dementia Friends awareness session, or watching online videos.

The Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Friends is making a huge difference throughout the UK and you can find out more information about the initiative by visiting their website ->
