Winter Tips for protecting your home

While we can’t predict what the weather will do in the coming months, it’s important that you prepare for all possibilities.

Here are some useful tips for your home maintenance:

  • Check your loft insulation is the recommended dimensions and still in good condition and all pipes and tanks are fully lagged.
  • Repair loose roof tiles and slates to reduce the risk of them falling off and check and clear your gutters.
  • Check windows and window frames are firmly fixed and with no possible gaps for rain to penetrate.
  • Maintain a temperature of at least 12 degrees Celsius, especially when you are away from the property overnight or on holiday. If you are away for a prolonged period of time, you may want to ensure you leave your loft hatch open so warm air can circulate to your pipes.
  • Make sure you know where the stop tap is so you can switch off the water if a pipe bursts or if you’re going to be away for a prolonged period.
  • Have your boiler serviced to ensure it’s in good working order.

NB: Always be cautious when undertaking any DIY task that you are not fully familiar with as you could injure yourself or those around you, seek professional help where required

Security

As the dark nights draw in, opportunities for criminals also increase, so securing the home is also important. With 59%* of burglaries taking place during the evening, combining maintenance with improving security can help to protect you and your home.

Here are some tips:

  • While you are away, ask a friend or relative to keep an eye on your home. Cancel your milk and paper delivery.
  • Make your home look as if someone is in by installing timing devices on interior lights or on a radio at predetermined intervals.
  • Install window locks on ground floor windows and deadlocks on all external doors. Check doors are in good condition and have toughened glass.
  • Lock all doors and windows when you leave the home, even if it’s for a short time.
