Here are some of the features of Legal & General's buildings and contents insurance. We've also provided a list of some of the things that aren't covered. For full details please read the relevant policy documents that are listed at the bottom of this page.

Buildings Insurance

Buildings insurance protects you against the cost of repairing or rebuilding your home if it is damaged or destroyed. It covers the structure of your home (the roof, walls and windows) and any permenent fixtures and fittings such as fitted kitchen units and bathroom suites.

Overview of buildings insurance

Essentials is designed to offer lower levels of cover than Extra in return for lower premiums.

Sum insured will be estimated, but can be increased.

  • £25,000 Alternative accomodation
  • £150 Minimum excess
    • Damage to buildings Including, but not limited to storm, flood, fire, smoke, earthquake
    • Escape of water and leakage of oil
    • Trace and access
    • Home emergency cover
    • Accidental damage for buildings (additional cover option)
    • Extended accidental damage for buildings (additional cover option)
  • £50,000 Alternative accomodation
  • £100 Minimum excess
    • Damage to buildings Including, but not limited to storm, flood, fire, smoke, earthquake
    • Home emergency cover - up to £500
    • Trace and access - up to £5,000
    • Escape of water and leakage of oil
    • Accidental damage for buildings
    • Extended accidental damage for buildings (additional cover option)

What isn't covered by Legal & General's buildings insurance

These are only some examples of the cover, limits and exclusions that apply. For more details of what is and isn't covered, please read the policy summaries and booklets, which can be found in the Key Documents section,.

  • A minimum excess of £150 for Essentials cover and £100 for Extra cover will apply on each claim or for escape of water claims a minimum excess of £250 will apply and in the event of subsidence, heave or landslip, the first £1,000.
  • Storm or flood damage to fences, gates and hedges.
  • Maintenance, wear and tear or damage that happens gradually over a period of time, like damp or rot.
  • If your home has been unoccupied for more than 60 consecutive days for Extra or 30 consecutive days for Essentials, we won't cover loss or damage caused by malicious acts, vandalism, theft, water or oil leaks, breakage of glass or sanitaryware or frost damage (In this case there is no cover from the first day the home is not lived in).
  • The cost of replacing any undamaged or unbroken item or parts of items forming part of a set, suite or other article of uniform nature, colour or design if damage occurs within a clearly identifiable area or to a specific part and it is not possible to match replacements.

Contents Insurance

Contents insurance will cover the cost of repairing or replacing your possessions that are damaged or destroyed as a result of an insured event, such as furniture and personal belongings.

Our Extra and Essentials policies can be extended to cover valuables and personal property for loss or damage away from the home for an additional premium.

What isn't covered by Legal and General's contents insurance

  • Pedal cycles stolen from home, unless it was entered by force and violence (covered by Extra policies only).     
  • Accidental damage to portable items like video cameras and hand held computer games, unless you've taken out optional contents extended accidental damage or personal possessions cover
