About Newcastle Building Society
Newcastle Building Society is one of the leading and strongest mutual building societies in the UK with assets under management in excess of £4.5 billion. We have more branches than any other building society in the North East, yet we are still small enough to care deeply about our members, employees and the communities we serve.
As a mutual organisation, our profits are invested back into the business and not paid out in the form of dividends to a limited number of shareholders. We are committed to the principles of mutuality, which means putting you, the customer, first. You can view our Customer Charter which details the core values of our business and explains our service commitments.
We were the first building society to be awarded Investor in People (IIP) status in 1992 in recognition of our commitment to staff development and our ability to provide a balanced training programme for every member of staff. In 2005 and again in 2008 we became one of the first organisations to obtain IIP accreditation under the new and more demanding standards.
The Society's origins go back to 1861, although our current format is the result of a merger between the Grainger and Newcastle Permanent Building Societies in 1980. Part of our Principal Office in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne is housed in a listed building which was designed by the renowned North East architect John Dobson as a "lying-in" or maternity hospital in 1826.
