Your guide to Christmas lights switch on 2017 in the North East There’s not long to go until Christmas, and the festive feeling is starting to kick in. Here is your guide to Christmas lights switch on events across our fantastic region. Newcastle Grey Street, Newcastle upon Tyne / Tuesday 14th November The city will be lit up at 6.30pm, but make sure you get down earlier as Metro Radio’s Steve and Karen will be offering fun and entertainment from 5.30pm North Tyneside Tynemouth Priory, Tyne and wear / Friday 17th November Taking place outside the historical backdrop of Tynemouth Priory, the Christmas light event will start at 4.30pm with the official switch on scheduled for 5.30pm. Gateshead Trinity Square, Gateshead / Thursday 23rd November Illuminating the centre of Gateshead, the switch on will take place at 6.30, with live entertainment from 4.00pm Durham Durham Market Place, Durham / Sunday 26th November Situated in the focal point of the medieval city, the Market Place will be home to the beginning of Durham’s Christmas celebrations with festive fun from 2.00pm. Berwick Town Hall, Marygate, Berwick / Saturday 25th November The Christmas lights will be formally switched on at 4.30pm at the ceremony on the steps of the Town Hall. South Shields South Shields Market Place, South Shields / Thursday 23rd November There will be live music and the Winter Lights Night Market this year in South Shields to celebrate the light switch on. Taking place from 3-8pm Yarm Yarm High Street, Yarm / Sunday 3rd December A traditional Christmas feel with a carol service from local school children, followed by the switch on at 4.30pm. Sunderland Keel Square, Sunderland / Thursday 23rd November Sunderland are in for a festive treat as pop star, Pixie Lott will be performing at the annual Christmas light switch on.
